Atlas of Family Housing in Serbia is the first published result of research of a group of professors from the Faculty of Architecture, University of Belgrade, conducted within the project at the European level. The aim of the research was to collect data on residential buildings in order to structure the building fund and to establish the building typology in Serbia, as a basis for evaluating energy characteristics and for suggesting possible improvements.
During the research, over 1,200 interviews were conducted within the detailed inventory and over 6,000 buildings were listed on the territory of Serbia, divided into 6 regions and 25 units - administrative districts. In the Atlas there are numerical, graphic and descriptive results for each district, as well as characteristic buildings with drawings and measures of the elements of the thermal envelope.
The formation of the typology for this research is based on three basic starting points:
1. architectural and urbanistic parameters,
2. formal and functional characteristics of the building that affect the thermal performance,
3. construction period as a connection with the changes in socio-political relations, construction technologies and construction regulations.
The collected information is sorted in the book by territorial principle, given the heterogeneous distribution of population and housing with different densities, types and characteristics of materials in different parts of the country. The data presented in this way reveal the specificities of individual regions in Serbia, pointing out that the attitude of building on the whole territory of Serbia in the same way is not an optimal solution. Such categorization should result in more efficient solutions to the problems of energy efficiency, rehabilitation and comfort improvement, which should be considered separately for each region.
The Atlas of Family Housing in Serbia, as a result of the first phase of this research, provides a clear insight into the state of the family housing fund in Serbia through a transparent and systematic presentation of data. The book is an informative basis for further research and action within different disciplines, primarily in the context of improving energy efficiency.
